Trump's interference in the 2022 midterms will 'only hurt Republicans': former GOP lawmaker

Appearing on CNN early Saturday morning former Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) cautioned his former colleagues running for office in 2022 that they would be better off running their campaigns attacking President Joe Biden than running as acolytes of ousted former president Donald Trump.

Speaking with hosts Boris Sanchez and Christi Paul, the Pennsylvania Republican asserted that Trump is still too toxic to many voters -- Republicans included -- and should be avoided at all costs.

'Blatant partisan power grab': Wisconsin GOP attempts to seize control of state's elections

Wisconsin Republicans, at the urging of Sen. Ron Johnson, are pushing to unilaterally seize control over federal elections in the battleground state, an effort that observers warned is part of the GOP's multi-pronged assault on democracy in the wake of former President Donald Trump's defeat last year.

The New York Times reported Friday that the state Republican Party is taking "direct aim" at the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC), an agency that the GOP established six years ago. According to the Times, "The onslaught picked up late last month after a long-awaited report on the 2020 results that was ordered by Republican state legislators found no evidence of fraud but made dozens of suggestions for the election commission and the GOP-led Legislature, fueling Republican demands for more control of elections."

'Now fire DeJoy': Biden moves to replace Trump-picked postal board members

President Joe Biden won applause Friday for moving to replace Ron Bloom and John Barger, two members of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors who've shown unwavering loyalty to scandal-plagued Postmaster General Louis DeJoy even as he's dramatically worsened mail delivery performance.

"It's affirmatively good to remove Bloom and Barger from the board, men who said they were 'tickled pink' with DeJoy's actions."

Matt Gaetz scorches Kevin McCarthy for 'hollow' speech: He's protecting people who 'stabbed Republicans in the back'

On the eve of House Democrats passing President Joe Biden's Build Back Better Act, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) took to the floor to deliver the longest single speech in the history of the chamber, trashing Democrats in a lengthy and meandering diatribe.

But not everyone in his own caucus was impressed. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who previously on Steve Bannon's podcast panned the speech as "a death rattle," appeared on One America News later in the day and complained that McCarthy's words mean nothing if he won't strip committee assignments from Republicans who didn't follow the Trump party line.

Dan Patrick, House Speaker Dade Phelan and the Republican budget-writers of the two chambers, state Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, and state Rep. Greg Bonnen, R-Friendswood.

DeSantis signs limits on vaccine mandates one day after Legislature approved them

Gov. Ron DeSantis affixed his signature Thursday to four bills designed to countermand President Joe Biden's COVID vaccine mandates, one day after the Legislature approved the package during a hastily organized special session.

He did so during a raucous press conference at an auto dealership in Brandon — a locale seemingly calculated to needle a president who's become the target of a popular right-wing cheer: “Let's go Brandon." You can read the history of the rude origins of that meme here.

Trump attorney Eastman went directly to Arizona’s House speaker with his insurrectionist scheme: report

John C. Eastman — a far-right attorney, Donald Trump ally, MAGA Republican and prominent figure in the Claremont Institute — has horrified constitutionalists because of his authoritarian plan to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. And one of the Republicans he reached out to directly, according to the Arizona Republic, was Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers.

Referencing reporting in the Arizona Republic, Talking Points Memo's Cristina Cabrera notes that on January 4, 2021, Eastman contacted Bowers directly "to pitch a legal theory on how Arizona's electors ought to be tossed away before Congress" certified "the electoral votes on January 6."

'I did!': Ocasio-Cortez interjects after McCarthy states 'nobody elected Joe Biden to be FDR'

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was among those who shouted back overnight during the historic and "unhinged" marathon speech by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy when the Republican from California stated that there was no person in the country who voted for President Joe Biden last year who did so because they hoped he would act like former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who ushered through the 20th century New Deal.

Quoting a recent comment from Rep. Abigail Spannberger (D-Va.) during his speech in order to argue that Democrats are misguided to make sweeping social investments as part of their Build Back Better Act—which received a final vote in the House on Friday morning—McCarthy stated, "Nobody elected Joe Biden to be FDR."
