Recent White House study on taxes shows the wealthy pay a lower rate than everybody else

A decade ago, in an essay for The New York Times, Warren Buffett disclosed that he had paid nearly $7 million in federal taxes in 2010. "That sounds like a lot of money," he wrote. "But what I paid was only 17.4 percent of my taxable income — and that's actually a lower percentage than was paid by any of the other 20 people in our office. Their tax burdens ranged from 33 percent to 41 percent and averaged 36 percent."

The words "taxable income" are doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Democrats warn of looming downgrade as US faces debt default crisis

Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer warned Tuesday that the United States was flirting with a disastrous downgrade in its credit rating as lawmakers remained deadlocked over how to stave off a debt default with just days to spare.

Democrats say the Senate needs to act by the end of the week to raise the government's borrowing cap, but a vote set by Schumer for Wednesday looks doomed to fail as the Republicans refuse to allow a simple majority vote.

MSNBC host calls Tucker Carlson a coward for refusing to attack Fox News over their vaccine and mask policies

As part of an epic takedown of Fox News host Tucker Carlson for his COVID conspiracy theories, MSNBC host Chris Hayes nailed the host for being a coward because he won't go after his own company for the mask and vaccine mandates.

Carlson, along with Laura Ingraham, have raged against the vaccine, but refuse to say whether or not they are personally vaccinated. It is likely because Fox News has one of the strictest vaccine mandates and if people aren't vaccinated, they require people to be tested daily. When Fox and other networks were in lockdown for safety, their hosts were doing shows from their own homes to protect themselves.

'What he wants is simply chaos': NYT report exposes Mitch McConnell’s insidious debt ceiling game

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has a long history of throwing his weight around whenever the United States needs to raise its debt ceiling, and October 2021 is no exception. McConnell, Jonathan Weisman reports in the New York Times, "appears to want to sow political chaos for Democrats while insulating himself and other Republicans from an issue that has the potential to divide them."

Weisman reports, "Mr. McConnell has said the government must not be allowed to stop paying its debts; he has also said he will not let any Republicans vote to raise the limit, while moving repeatedly to block Democrats from doing so themselves. Instead, he has prescribed a path forward for Democrats: Use a complicated budget process known as reconciliation to maneuver around a Republican filibuster that he refuses to lift."
