Kristi Noem is no longer serving in the diplomatic role President Donald Trump gave her after removing her as Homeland Security secretary, CBS News reported Thursday.
Her designation as a special envoy for the Shield of the Americas expired last month, a State Department official told the network. She remains in the MAGA administration, working on the same initiative in a different capacity.
"She is now a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary Landau and continues to work on the Shield of the Americas portfolio,” the official said.
The change took effect just before the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Noem continued attending meetings associated with the initiatives, according to CBS News. It happened at a time when multiple Trump administration officials have either resigned or departed the White House, including Trump's ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle.
But as the network pointed out, Ecuador’s government still identified her as the special envoy when she met President Daniel Noboa on Sept. 22. Trump also publicly praised her at a gathering of the coalition’s leaders.
"I want to thank Kristi Noem for doing a really terrific job,” Trump said in his remarks.
Noem’s appointment to the role came in March after the president ousted her from DHS amid scrutiny of her leadership and adviser Corey Lewandowski’s influence.
CBS News described Noem’s public activities in her now-former envoy role as “limited.”
