Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin proposed stopping international flight processing at airports in Democratic-led sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with the administration's immigration enforcement.
Speaking on Fox News, Mullin said the administration was "drawing up plans" to block international flights from cities where "local radical left Democrats aren't allowing us to do our job." Critics immediately attacked the proposal as impractical and likely unconstitutional.
CNN national security analyst Juliette Kayyem warned on X, "Planes don't divert to other airports," she explained, "The flights will be cancelled, disrupting blue and red voters, impacting the airlines, and having no impact on immigration policy."
Aaron Reichlin-Melnick called the plan "actively insane," on a recent post on Bluesky, noting mass cancellations would cause economic damage far beyond targeted cities.
Legal observers cited the Constitution's Commerce Clause prohibiting preferential treatment of state ports.
Multiple commentators questioned whether the administration was serious or using it as a distraction.
