How anti-vaccination hysteria is about sex, accidentally helping Big Pharma---anything but science

It's painful for me to write this, because I don't like criticizing people I generally admire, but if I'm going to get on the right for sex-phobia and anti-science thinking, I have to do it for the left, too. I hinted at my frustrations in my article about the reproductive health panel at WAM, but truth told, I was banging my head against my desk in frustration when a handful of anti-vaccination types absolutely destroyed any science-based, productive conversation by making the entire discussion about how Merck only invented Gardasil because they enjoy profiting off killing people. It's one of the most frustrating illogical habits of the left, to assume that because someone makes money at something, that action is almost surely immoral and probably actively evil. You definitely get that every time someone tries to make a scandal out of the fact that liberal and feminist bloggers have advertisements, and you get it in the anti-vaccination hysteria.

Obama overseas: what a relief after Bush

With North Korea's Kim Jong-Il acting up again (he seems to erupt like Old Faithful), puffing himself up to impress/scare the rest of the world and test whoever happens to be president. Barack Obama discussed his plan to help move the globe toward nuclear disarmament and said this about the North Korea missile firing in an address to a huge crowd in Hradcany Square, Prague, Czech Republic.

Rush: Obama praise will give Gordon Brown 'anal poisoning'

How'd I miss this disgusting screed by true leader of the GOP the other day? I think the guy must be back on the Hillbilly Heroin.

North Dakota Senate rejects zygote citizen bill

The ridiculous and dangerous "personhood" amendment bit the dust in the North Dakota Senate. Thank god this failed -- the ND House recently gave the thumbs up to declaring a fertilized egg a person, defining it as "any organism with the genome of homo sapiens."

For shame, Austin

I'm usually happy with and downright proud of my city, as most regular readers are no doubt well aware. But right now I'm hopping mad and ashamed, because of this article detailing the bigotry-based reaction to what I thought of mostly as an annual tradition: Texas Relays. It's an enormous track and field event, and it draws athletes from around Texas and much of the country, as well as friends and families who come out to support them. On Friday night, athletes, friends, and family descend on downtown Austin to party. In this way, it's no different than any other huge event that draws a group of people to wander around 6th St. to soak it in, drink, and carouse. It's not just SXSW---it's Halloween, Mardi Gras, Republic of Texas Rally, Pride Festival, post-any home game that ends in victory, you name it. Descending on downtown for a shit ton of parties is the Austin tradition.

The Hot Issue Of The 2012 GOP Primaries

My guess? Overturning Marbury v. Madison. Ed Whelan spends a rather significant portion of his (limited) mental energy railing against the ideas that a.) times change (THEY DO NOT, he says on a five-pound laptop computer connected to the Internet) and b.) that judges talk funny.

Dear film directors of earnest romantic comedies:

You like classic and current indie, punk, and underground rock music. Fancy that, so do I! If you ever were to come over to my house to hang out, you are welcome to admire my concert posters and praise my record collection, and being the sap that I am, I will eat that shit up. But if you continue to use music I adore as a substitute in your film for genuinely felt emotions or real meaning, we may have to have it out "Rock of Love" style. Because I'm not a sap for that. Having interesting music in your "quirky" romantic comedy doesn't distract me from the fact that it's self-indulgent, maudlin, sexist, and cliched. It just makes me worry that favorite songs of mine are now tainted by association with your piece of crap movie.

If our bodies were full of acid, then we'd be dead

Someone decided to collect a bunch of quotes from some fundies about atheism and evolution and make a video of it. It's....sublime.

The Iowa Family Policy Center tries to distance itself from the marriage=bestiality crowd

This photo by Rodney White of the Des Moines Register shows you the flaccid, irrelevant arguments left for people who oppose marriage equality. And at this point, even the fundies can't take the whackjobs in their movement.
