Still mild compared to that lost weekend with Alan Greenspan

Gmail's spam filters having apparently taken the autumn off, I'm mostly inundated with offers for $1000 Wal-Mart gift cards or "CSI degrees" - which I assume mean forensic science, rather than cytoplasmic sperm injection - which is why Leonid Teytelman's (teytleman at g mail dot com, shared by permission) e-mail almost slipped right past me.

Daddy D sucks up to Palin in radio interview

Right Wing Watch's Kyle Mantyla put himself through the torture of listening to Daddy D slobber all over Sarah Palin so you don't have to. She not only reiterated that she and John McCain are staunch womb control advocates, she in turn slobbered over the fossilized professional "protector of the family."

The Black Hive Mind

I'm not even sure how to take Kathryn Lopez's suggestion that we can interpret Colin Powell's endorsement as race-based because Essence and Vibe endorsed Obama.

8 Against 8 - are you with us?

As regular readers, I live in North Carolina, a state where my wife and I have no legal rights here as a same-sex couple, even though we legally married in Canada in 2004. It is for that reason that I have donated to defeat Proposition 8. California's legislature, representing the people, and its courts, representing the rule of law, have moved to recognize the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry. We cannot allow an established civil right in the Golden State to be overturned at the ballot box.

Robin Hayes clarifies his 'real Americans' remarks with gay bashing

Rep. Robin Hayes (R-NC08), after his campaign was caught in a flat-out lie over his comments at a rally that "liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God" that happened to be recorded, finally decided to issue a "clarification", saying his comments "came out wrong."

The High Cost Of Looking Confused

imageAll I'm saying is that if a girly-man Democrat had spent $150,000 outfitting themselves for ten weeks, it would be the story that consigned them, their ticket and perhaps their party to FOREVER ELECTORAL DOOOOOOOOOOM.

Gah, part two

Here's the first part of the post. I thought I had saved it without publishing, but I guess not, and there's already a bunch of comments, so I'll just finish it here.

Even when they're winning, they're losing

This video is being posted all over the liberal blogs because it's such a nice reminder of how much of our opposition is composed of mindless theocrats. I'm posting it because I like that her invocation of the Christian cliche, "I'll pray for you," is without any ambiguity. There's going to be a point where upwards of 95% of threats to pray for someone will mean, "I wish I could force you to do X, but I know I can't (yet), so I'm going to ask god to force you." We probably reached that percentage during this election season.

You're On Your Own

imageWhen I graduated college, I considered getting individual insurance while I was looking for steady work. Of course, after seeing the monthly premiums that would land me a prime $5,000 deductible and little to no coverage for routine healthcare (along with the always-awesome set of discount cards that'll land you a cool 15% off at Lenscrafters...as will your $1.50 Sunday paper), I skipped it and ran the risk of having to pay for anything that came up. As risky as it felt with the ingrained message that without health insurance you die in a fetid swamp of debt, the only time that an affordable policy made sense was if I anticipated having invasive surgery at some point before getting a job with more affordable insurance. Being young and healthy, spending hundreds of dollars a month in order to have the privilege of spending thousands before being denied for my medical needs seemed about as appealing as a nice harsh buzz off a liter of Boone's Farm. And a much less appealing story to tell when I'm wheeled into the emergency room.

Protecting Our God Given Right To Threaten Elected Officials

Ever since Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (who's one of the nicest people I've ever met, by the way) decided that the rights of voters trumped the right of the GOP to not have people vote against it, she's been under fire for her decision. It's certainly a sea change - back in 2004, Ken Blackwell's only question when the GOP demanded voter obstruction was if they'd like a 2 for 1 special. I knew that her office had it bad, but I had no idea it was getting so bad that she and her family are experiencing threats of harm and death. The statement from Governor Strickland:
