Black bear cub shot, covered by Obama sign and left on Western Carolina University campus

The sickness continues...this is the Right's idea of a "political statement" -- shooting a bear in the head and stapling Obama-Biden signs to it.

Zombie libertarianism

Jacob Weisberg surveys our financial collapse and declares libertarianism dead. (Hat tip.) Alas, I wish I could feel as secure as he does on this front, but I'm afraid I don't, because while it's true that we can blame deregulation frenzy for our current economic situation---and that people trying to say otherwise sound like the ripe fools they are---I fear that the premise of his article is a bit off. Libertarianism may be extremely unpopular right now, but it's always been unpopular and that hasn't stopped it. In fact, your average pedantic libertarian gets off on the fact that most people wisely hate libertarians, because it confirms to the libertarian that he is a unique snowflake that the rest of the world is too stupid to get.* Libertarianism isn't popular, but it will always be well-funded because the class warfare at the heart of it appeals to embittered, willfully ignorant rich people who give money to think tanks.

A preview of Nov. 5?

Let's hope so; we already expect the Republicans to try to steal the election, so holding one's breath is a given, even with a campaign imploding as deliciously as McCain's. This winner comes to us via Shakesville, created by reader Schmiss:

Bamboo Reviews: On Beauty

There's so much going on in the book On Beauty by Zadie Smith that I finished it a week ago and I'm still digesting it. I was telling a friend about it the other night, and explaining how fascinating I found the character of Victoria Kipps, who is very beautiful and has, at the age of 19, become a stalwart performer of an idealized femininity, the kind of woman who wouldn't know what a real orgasm feels like but performs like a porn star in bed because she has attuned herself to what the culture tells her men want to see and becomes it. The kind of woman who inexperienced and dumb men become fascinated with, but women and sharp men have very little patience for. In other words, said a friend who came into the conversation late, Sarah Palin. Peals of laughter. Well, sort of. Palin is a deft manipulator of male fantasies and her own image, and this young woman in the book is a broken soul. She's not evil and she's somewhat defiant, but because she cannot reject on any level what our culture tells us is the role of beautiful women---to look good and gasp in faux ego-soothing excitement.

Stupidity Will Suffice

McCain/Palin mob: 30 cars owners find tires slashed after NC Obama rally; voters heckled

Sigh. This happened yesterday in Fayetteville yesterday. And only a couple of days before, a Greensboro reporter was kicked to the ground by another McCain/Palin patriot at a Bible Spice rally at Elon.

This could be the end of blogging as we know it

We've hit "peak coffee". Look: I ride a bike and walk and take the bus. I sold my truck as part of my efforts to reduce my carbon footprint and not add to the oil depletion problem. But I need my coffee. I suspect I'm not the only blogger whose coherence as a writer is entirely dependent on the fragrant bean from heaven.

Palin comes out full force for federal marriage amendment

Log Cabin Republicans -- do you need to know any more about Bible Spice's perspective on gay and lesbian relationships now? McCain doesn't support FMA, a fact the LCRs has touted early and often, even though it's misleading because he is merely taking a federalist position -- he supports state amendments, and actually would support FMA if it looked like marriage equality was going to be the law of the land in a SCOTUS rulling.
