The too little too late debate review post

Update: I want to include an insight from keshmeshi in comments. I think that McCain did intend to snub Obama with his refusal to speak to him or look at him. However, because Obama kept looking steadily at McCain and calling him by his name, it ended up making Obama look dominant and McCain look afraid. Snubbing is a specific maneuver, and not appropriate to this situation. In this case, it looked like a game of chicken that Obama won without blinking.

John McCain: Broder's Petraeus

If there's one thing I expect my DC poltiical pundits to be intimately familiar with, it's bullshit expressions of masculinity. So when David Broder declares John McCain an alpha male for not looking at Barack Obama during the debate.

A fundie bearing hellfire on a pizza box at NC Pride

Kate and I went to the NC Pride parade today, and it was definitely the largest turnout we've seen. There was a lot of Obama support out there (right: this was my favorite T-shirt of the day). We marched in the Obama Pride section this time around. It was a wild assortment of progressive allies, members of the LGBT community, and very strong corporate support (Suntrust, US Air, Bank of America, Best Buy, Glaxo, to name a few).

Q of the day - prepping for Palin

Folks at my pad were having fun with this one. As you know, when candidates prep for a debate, usually they have a member of their own party stand in for the opposition, and that person tries to approximate the demeanor of the opponent to make it a realistic practice. It was reported that former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele played Obama opposite McCain. Obama had Washington lawyer and former Clinton Greg Craig play McCain.

Right wing vigilante fantasies

Instead of watching the debates last night, I went downtown to see Gnarls Barkley and Cansei de Ser Sexy (it was awesome!), and the place we went to dinner beforehand is this punk rock pub that plays a lot of cult films and classic films and sometimes trashy horror films on the TVs. Last night, they were playing "Taxi Driver", and it just so happened to be the big shootout scene. The bartender kept rewinding the most violent parts of it and playing them back in slow motion, and everyone in the bar was cheering him on. Such is the perverse brilliance of that movie that it both sends up and revels in a fantasy of vigilante violence. I love that movie (who doesn't?), because it works on so many levels, but to me, it works most as an intensely political film, one where a set of right wing urges and fantasies are put in a funhouse mirror. The bitterness, fucked up attitudes towards women, and thwarted sense of entitlement that the movie captures has only gotten worse in the decades since, and we subsequently have seen a rise in personality types like Travis Bickle, people whose right wing politics get them stuck in such a loop that they lash out violently. And unlike Travis Bickle, they have right wing talk radio picking their targets for them, from icons of the federal government in the OKC bombing to a Unitarian Universalist church in the Tennessee shooting.

Questionably acted, technically problematic, and puerile...

But I LOL'd. And even more at the sequel, after the jump.
