This is why so many liberal men shy away from writing about reproductive rights

They're afraid of coming across like neck-breathing perverts, like Lord Saletan does here. The thing is, there's actually a point to be made about how our culture is very pious about sex and pregnancy, and the only way to maintain that piety is for the young women of the country who are emblems of purity to the public to have very private access to the symbols of sluttitude: abortion and birth control. But the way he goes about it screams of neck-breathing perversion, making a list of daughters of candidates between the arbitrary ages of 17 and 30. It's actually indistinguishable from a list made by perverts of "chicks I'd like to fuck", with the lines drawn to communicate to other men that you're both properly contemptuous of women aging and a little (but not too edgy) with your willingness to objectify teenagers. Does Saletan think that women over 30 can't get pregnant and require abortion services? Does he think that your willingness to have sex (or men's willingness to have sex with you) shuts down at 30? We can only assume.

Yes, She Can

Palin can run for Vice-President being a mother of a newborn and the mother of a pregnant daughter. If my mom can take care of both of her parents, a child, hold a job that requires an hour commute each way, pay off her student loans and do so after my father abandoned us, Sarah Palin can fly around the country and talk about cutting taxes and opposing but not opposing the Bridge to Nowhere.

The RNC platform: homophobia is alive and well

I have a copy of the entire Republican platform (PDF), adopted on the first day of the convention. There is a ton of predictable wingnuttery to thumb through, so feel free to download, find an area of interest and comment away.

NYT: fundies pushed Palin selection, McCain team left scrambling to vet

The blockbuster story of this Sarah Palin debacle is that John McCain and his team simply didn't vet this candidate. He only met her once, spoke with her once, and only now is there a GOP team on the ground combing through records to see what other skeletons are in her closet.

Have your lie and eat it too

I agree with Jesse, and with what Amanda actually said (not with what the usual cast of bad-faithers are babbling out, i.e. that Amanda's channeling of what the typical voter is going to think is somehow what Amanda thinks): A teenage mother is not the story. Policy is the story.

Sarah Palin Is Keyser Soze

Sarah Palin was allegedly a part of a secessionist Alaskan party before she became a Republican. She also was so independent of the Alaskan Republican culture of corruption that she ran Ted Stevens' 527.

John McCain Is Pregnant

See, what tends to get lost in the mix when prominent social conservatives have teenage mothers and gays and lesbians as a part of their families is that it's not about them, their families and their privacy. It's about the millions of other families around the country who have to deal with the same things, and don't get the benefit of saying "it's a private matter" and being largely ignored by the conservative movement when their family members have to go out into the world and be told that they're heathens precipitating the fall of Western Civilization.

Straight from the wingnut's mouth

Earlier today, I blogged about how, for the anti-choice voting block, abortion and contraception access are issues to hang an entire anti-feminist agenda on. And that you can't understand the anti-choice single issue voting phenomenon until you realize that it's not really a single issue that they're voting on, but that they're voting for a fantasy where women are returned to the home and the engine of American society runs on the backs of women, their subservience, and their unpaid labor.

Update: A quick confirmation---Palin does support abstinence-only "education". If you tell kids that condoms don't work, they won't use them.

Why anti-choicers own the Republican Party

Ezra's eyes were opened to how much Republicans are controlled by anti-choice fanatics. He lists a number of very conservative, more experienced potential Republican V.P. picks that McCain could have gone with, and then says:

Hurricanes: Nature's Al-Qaeda

Let's just suck it up and admit that death and destruction are always net goods for Republicans. As repetitive as this is, it bears pointing out just how excoriated Democrats would be if they were publicly salivating over the chance to appear "presidential" and "in charge" whenever disaster struck, and if Democrats were excited about the possibility of avoiding direct comparison with their Republican opponent.
