Maine Democrat Graham Platner faces pressure to withdraw from his U.S. Senate race following sexual assault allegations by a former girlfriend.

Following Politico's story published Monday, multiple Democrats withdrew their endorsements and the party cut financial support to Platner.

With the nominee's anticipated withdrawal, Maine Democrats must rapidly identify a replacement to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. According to the Maine Wire, actor Patrick Dempsey, known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy, is being considered as an unlikely "wild card" candidate.

Dempsy, 60, a Lewiston native, maintains strong Maine ties through his acting career and charitable Dempsey Center work.

Political observers suggest Dempsey could attract national media attention, energize Democratic donors, and appeal to women voters, independents, and political outsiders.

If Platner withdraws by July 13, Maine Democrats have until July 27 to select a replacement. This would give Democrats approximately two weeks to launch a statewide campaign.
