DeSantis calls for end to Disney’s 'special privileges' in Florida

Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed his support Thursday for ending Disney’s “special privileges” in Florida, saying the entertainment giant’s political sway is waning. DeSantis has been battling the Walt Disney Co. over its opposition to HB 1557, officially titled Parental Rights in Education but known by many as the “don’t say gay” bill. “As a matter of first principle, I don’t support special privileges in law, just because a company is powerful, and they’ve been able to wield a lot of power,” he said at an event in West Palm Beach. His comments came after state Rep. Spencer Roach, R-North Fort Mye...

Florida LGBTQ students, parents, and advocacy group sue state over ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law

Statewide LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Florida filed a federal lawsuit Thursday against Gov. Ron DeSantis, state education officials, and others over a new law aiming to limit conversations about LGBTQ people in classrooms.

The lawsuit arrived in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, claiming that the newly signed law, HB 1557, violates the U.S. Constitution, including discrimination protections under the First Amendment, which is related to freedom of expression, and the Fourteenth Amendment, which says no state can deprive any person of life, liberty, or property.

Judge blocks all new Florida voter suppression laws — then knocks the Supreme Court for putting voting rights 'under siege'

In a 288-page document, District Court Judge Mark Walker blocked the Florida voter suppression bill and specifically called out judges and the Supreme Court for undercutting the Voting Rights Act. Mark Joseph Stern, Slate's court and law writer, cited several excerpts in the judge's decision that make the decision groundbreaking. Until the case goes to the Supreme Court, Florida's suppression laws will be stopped.

Republicans around the country have been pushing voter suppression laws after former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election after a record-setting voter turnout. In Texas, for example, Republicans confessed that the law they passed putting additional barriers on vote by mail wasn't due to an outbreak of voter fraud. Instead, it was to make people feel better.

‘Unlawful attempt to stigmatize, silence and erase LGBTQ people’: Equality Florida sues DeSantis

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is the leading defendant in a massive 80-page lawsuit by Equality Florida against the "Don't Say Gay" law he signed this week. Roberta Kaplan, one of the nation's top civil rights lawyers, who successfully argued the Supreme Court case that effectively overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), is the lead attorney on the case.

"Florida House Bill 1557 (widely known as the 'Don’t Say Gay' law) is an unlawful attempt to stigmatize, silence, and erase LGBTQ people in Florida’s public schools. It seeks to do so by imposing a sweeping, vague ban covering any instruction on 'sexual orientation and gender identity,' and by constructing a diffuse enforcement scheme designed to maximize the chilling effect of this prohibition," the lawsuit begins.

DeSantis vetoes congressional maps, sets special session for April

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis made good on his promise to veto the GOP Legislature’s congressional redistricting map Tuesday because it doesn’t eliminate a “racially gerrymandered” Black district in North Florida. DeSantis then called a special session for April 19-22 “for the sole purpose” of working out the issue of the congressional maps, giving lawmakers a seven-page legal analysis arguing that their plan is unconstitutional because it created an unlawful district using race as the sole basis for it. The Legislature, “in their understandable zeal to conform to try to apply what the...

DeSantis uncharacteristically silent as Florida faces pressure to dump Russian investments: report

Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine, politicians on both sides of the aisle in the United States have taken strong positions in support of Ukraine. Those actions have included pouring Russian vodka down the drain and divesting investments in Russian companies.

In Florida, GOP Sen. Marco Rubio introduced legislation that would bar U.S. institutions from investing in Russian securities. “We need to minimize the resultant harm to Americans, including teachers and retirees, who have pensions and retirement accounts invested in Russian securities,” Rubio said at the time. “Many Americans do not even realize that fund managers have placed their money in these Russian companies.”

Trump sicced his followers on the GOP's 'RINOs' -- and it's tearing the party apart: report

According to a report from Politico's David Siders, Republican-on-Republican attacks have exploded since Donald Trump left office and a great part of it can be pinned on the former president's MAGA followers who are determined to drive those they believe to be Republican in Name Only (RINO) from the party.

Noting that RINO has a long and rich history within the GOP -- once mildly used over disagreements over policy -- now the word has become a "slur" used to attack anyone who doesn't wholeheartedly support Trump and everything he says and does.
