Teachers get caught in the middle of Florida’s culture war bills

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two major pieces of legislation pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and approved by the Florida Legislature have put public school teachers in the crosshairs of the Republican-waged culture wars and created confusion over just what they can teach in class, critics say. Passed mostly along party lines by the GOP-controlled Legislature, the bills had not yet been sent to the governor’s office as of Friday. If signed into law as expected, they would restrict what teachers can say about sexual orientation, gender identity, racism and white privilege, as well as give parents more say on...

‘Blowhard jerk’ Ron DeSantis is the GOP’s best chance to ‘move on from Trump’: conservative

Countless Republicans live in terror of former President Donald Trump saying anything against them. But Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Never Trump conservative Matt Lewis stresses in a March 17 opinion column for the Daily Beast, is one MAGA Republican who has shown some independence from Trump — and Lewis believes that at this point, “jerk” and “blowhard” DeSantis may be the GOP’s best chance to “move on” from Trump.

Lewis explains, “Unlike the progressives who love to hate all viable Republican contenders — let’s not forget what they did to Mitt Romney in 2012 — and the Never Trump conservatives who have mostly given up on the GOP, there exists a breed of intellectual conservative…. that is anxious to find a post-Trump Republican who will inspire the party faithful to say, ‘Trump was great! But it’s time to move forward into the future’…. These DeSantis conservatives believe he’s the goldilocks candidate, which is to say he’s conventional enough to suit them…. while still being controversial enough to satisfy the MAGA crowd.”

Florida Republicans' 'Don't Say Gay' bill spells headache for Disney

Discontent is afoot at the happiest place on Earth, as Disney employees this week protested the company's reaction to Florida's so-called "Don't say gay" bill, which would prohibit discussing LGBT topics in classrooms.

The proposed law, which critics call discriminatory, has been a headache for Disney since before the southern US state's legislature passed the measure last week, with the entertainment giant employing more than 75,000 people at its theme park in Orlando.

Coming to a school near you: Stealth religion and a Trumped-up version of American history

In recent years, Hillsdale College, a small private Christian school in Michigan, has quietly become a driving force in America's ongoing fights around education. A "feeder school" for the Trump administration, Hillsdale led President Trump's controversial 1776 Commission and serves as a testing ground for the right's most ambitious ideas: For instance, that diversity erodes national unity, that Vladimir Putin is a populist hero and that conservatives should lure so many children out of public schools that the entire system collapses.

Hillsdale has inconspicuously been building a network of "classical education" charter schools, which use public tax dollars to teach that the U.S. was founded on "Judeo-Christian" principles and that progressivism is fundamentally anti-American. In January, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced plans to partner with Hillsdale to launch as many as 50 such schools, which public education advocates fear could be a tipping point in the privatization battle.

Florida’s redistricting process headed for a ‘train wreck’ as veto, lawsuits loom

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida’s congressional maps remain in limbo as Gov. Ron DeSantis and the GOP Legislature continue their standoff over a Black district in North Florida. And nobody quite knows what’s going to happen next. But lost amid the deadlock is that even the Legislature’s so-called “compromise” redistricting map would radically reshape two Central Florida seats, turning Democrat Stephanie Murphy’s district more Republican and making Val Demings’ district more white. There is still some hope for Democrats, however, as a new lawsuit and a potential impasse following a veto could throw it ...

Trump's 'influence diminishes more each day' as would-be 2024 challengers speak out against him

Some of the would-be Republican presidential contenders have begun distancing themselves from Donald Trump.

Three conservatives -- Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former vice president Mike Pence -- have offered guarded criticism of the twice-impeached former president, but their critiques have stood out in a GOP still dominated by Trump, reported Politico.

Anti-Trump Republicans engaging in a 'shadow primary' in case he falters: report

While high-profile Republicans like former Vice President Mike Pence and ex-U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley are ostensibly sitting on the sidelines waiting to see if Donald Trump announces his third bid to run for president again, some of the former president's Republican critics are making moves to line up support for a bid themselves if he decides to sit 2024 out.

According to a report from the Associated Press, a trio of anti-Trumpers are testing the waters by traveling and seeing if there is enough support to jump into the race with an appeal to conservatives who have grown tired of the twice-impeached former president's act.

John Oliver takes down Ron DeSantis, Disney and AT&T for BS lies over Florida 'don't say gay' bill

Gov. Ron DeSantis was asked a question about the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill in Florida this week and lashed out at the reporter for phrasing it using the moniker. DeSantis complained that the bill says nothing about the gays, rather it says "homosexuals," and it's only about Kindergarteners through third grade who can't be told what the words mean.

"Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver set the record straight, no pun intended, by saying that despite DeSantis' explanation of the bill, it actually gives parents the ability to sue teachers if they feel like something was told to them in a way that wasn't "age-appropriate." What does age-appropriate mean? It doesn't say.

‘Culture wars’ session of Florida Legislature is nearly over, but emotions are still raw

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s Republican leaders made certain this year’s legislative session would be emotional. With potential presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis helping set the agenda, they championed bills that stoked passions and resonated with their base on wedge issues that included sexual orientation, abortion, immigration, voting and the teaching of the nation’s racial history. Lawmakers are set to conclude the session Monday. Throughout the last two months, Democrats and Republicans shared wrenching personal stories during heated debates that devolved into partisan and cultural...

Florida county residents angry after they're hit with multi-million dollar fine for having mandates

Per the report, Leon County, home of Florida's capital city, Tallahassee, was fined "over its 'blatant violation' of Florida’s controversial 'vaccine passport' law that prohibits governments and businesses from requiring residents to show proof they were vaccinated against the coronavirus."

The Florida Department of Health's notice also claims the county violated the law a total of 714 times by requiring all municipal employees to get vaccinated. Fourteen employees were also terminated for their refusal to get the COVID vaccine.
