Trump's PAC is running a shady 'opt-in' scheme to double donations for his birthday: report

According to a report from Insider, fans of Donald Trump who are donating to his Save America PAC are being the victims of an opt-in scheme that doubles their donation as a "birthday gift" to the ex-president.

In April, it was reported that Trump's losing presidential campaign was milking supporters pocketbooks with a recurring payment plan at a time when the campaign was "cash-strapped" -- and, according to the New York Times, "In the final two and a half months of 2020, the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and their shared accounts issued more than 530,000 refunds worth $64.3 million to online donors."

Insider reports that Trump is up to his old tricks at his PAC.

"Save America, the political action committee (PAC) created by Donald Trump, is urging donors to 'surprise' the former president with extra money on his birthday," Insider's Grace Dean reports. "When supporters donate via Save America's site, the website automatically ticks a box saying they would like to donate the same amount on Trump's birthday, which is June 14."

The report adds that a donation given now will be doubled on June 14, unless the Trump supporters note they want to opt out.

"The webpage also automatically ticks a box to say the supporter wants to make their contribution a monthly donation." Insider reports before adding, "The website said that the donations would go towards the Save America joint fundraising committee. It said that 90% of the proceeds would go to the Save America PAC and 10% would go to the Make America Great Again PAC (MAGAPac), which was formerly his presidential campaign committee."
