Editor & Publisher has named Raw Story to its 2024 "News Media's 10 to Watch" list — an honor recognizing 10 news organizations for their innovation and ingenuity.

The publication praised Raw Story's staff expansion, "deep reporting" and growth in readership and subscribers.

Raw Story, America’s largest independently-owned political news site, has hired a new assistant managing editor and news writer as it continues to expand its breaking news and investigative reporting staffs.

Assistant Managing Editor Kathleen Culliton comes from New York City Patch, where she served as the local news outlet's managing editor for New York City.

Culliton has covered local and national news for more than a decade for outlets that include the New York Post, Al Jazeera, DNAinfo New York, Bustle, the New York Daily News, WNYC, NY1 and City Limits. Kathleen is an alumna of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and originally hails from New York City.

WASHINGTON — Raw Story today filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of the Navy following the agencies’ refusal to release records related to a former U.S. Marine and avowed neo-Nazi.

In May, Raw Story investigative reporter Jordan Green filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the U.S. Navy for “memoranda, emails, correspondence or other documents” related to the former Marine, Jordan Duncan, who the government has accused of participating in a white supremacist terror plot and possessing classified government documents.

The U.S. Navy denied Raw Story’s request and subsequent appeal of that denial, citing Duncan’s privacy interests. Duncan, who has been detained since his arrest in 2020, is charged with conspiracy to illegally manufacture and transport firearms and conspiracy to damage an energy facility. ...

Raw Story investigative reporter Jordan Green has won a 2023 Folio Award for his January 6-related investigations and reporting on extremism, the Fair Media Council announced today at its annual luncheon on Long Island, N.Y.

Green, who joined Raw Story in 2021, was honored for writing a series of investigations published during 2022, including exclusive articles about the January 6 insurrection, election denialism, power grid attacks and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Editor-in-Chief Dave Levinthal this week detailed Raw Story's plans for the newsroom's investigative reporting — and dug into a pair of new investigations already published.

"In 2023, we want to expand and we want to increasingly do incisive, enterprising, original investigative journalism," Levinthal told host Bill Scanlan on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal".

Such reporting "will not just be telling you about things that are in the news environment right now, but also, uncovering lots of news that you do not know and are not going to be finding in any other publication."...
