China bombards LinkedIn in 'astounding' effort to recruit US spies: experts

China is not recruiting its spies through meetings in dark alleys, nor by courtship over covert drinks. Rather, the intelligence agency and military of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are using LinkedIn, the professional networking site, to send as many as 30,000 messages per hour to recruit spies, according to a new book, “The Great Heist: China’s Epic Campaign to Steal America’s Secrets.”

David R. Shedd, a former director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), called the book he co-wrote with Andrew Badger, a former DIA case officer, “a real, urgent call” to Americans, from corporations to government, to better respond to China’s success in stealing tech and defense innovations.

“I still don't think America has woken up on how serious the problem is,” Shedd told Raw Story. ...

Seoul says Pyongyang launched ballistic missile towards Sea of Japan

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile, the South Korean military said on Tuesday. North Korea launched what appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) from the Pyongyang area at about 6:53 am (2153 GMT on Monday) towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, the general staff in Seoul (JCS) said. According to the South Korean military the missile travelled some 600 kilometres before ending in the sea. Data on the missile test is being analysed in cooperation with the US and Japan, it said. Rescuers racing to retrieve sick American from Turkish cave; stuck inside since Saturday

An American cave rescuer has himself been stuck in a cave since Saturday, after falling ill while traveling in Turkey. More than 150 rescuers are involved in the “complex” operation to save Mark Dickey, a 40-year-old instructor for the National Cave Rescue Commission. He began suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding during a research mission in the Morca Cave, located in southern Turkey’s Taurus Mountains. Dickey, described as “a highly trained caver and a cave rescuer,” was part of a team attempting to locate and chart a new passage through the cave, which is the third-deepest in Turkey, acc......

Germany's Scholz calls for equal partnership with Asia, Africa, South America

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for an equal partnership with the emerging states of Asia, Africa and Latin America ahead of the G20 summit of major economies in India. "This is also a great ... obligation on our part," the chancellor said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio published on Saturday. He emphasized that many Western states have a special responsibility towards countries on these continents because of their colonial history. Germany had colonies in Africa and Asia. This is the moment "that we invest everything for this level playing field," Scholz said. The leaders ......

Chinese millionaire businessman fails college entrance exam for the 27th time

A Chinese businessman whose construction material business made him a millionaire still can’t get into college after failing his county’s entrance exam for the 27th time. Liang Shi, 56, scored 424 points in China’s standardized Gaokao test. Aspiring college students need at least 458 out of a possible 750 points to qualify for China’s university system. Liang first took the exam in 1983, according to the BBC. But after quitting drinking so he could focus on studying for this month’s test and still coming up short, he’s discouraged. “I used to say ‘I just don’t believe I won’t make it,’ but now......

The Arctic risks having no sea ice during summer by 2030s: study

The Arctic risks being having no sea ice during the summer by the 2030s, according to a new study. Previous estimates had the region losing sea ice during the warmer months a decade later, another warning that climate change is accelerating. The study, published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, compared satellite images and models from 1979 to 2019 to see how ice was changing and determined previous estimates of the sea ice decline had been too low. The data also showed that, even with significant, immediate cuts to pollution and emissions, the region will be sea ice-free in the s......
