A Strawberry Moon will be visible this weekend. What it is and how to see it.

After what felt like weeks of rain in some portions of the country, skies should be clear enough in many places this weekend to see June’s full moon, dubbed the Strawberry Moon. Some communities have planned local events to give skywatchers reason to be outside under the lunar orb. But you don’t have to moon-bathe with a crowd; just find a spot with a good view of the sky, turn off all the lights you can and be looking up just before midnight Saturday. —What time does the Strawberry Moon happen? NASA says the full moon will be exactly opposite the sun at 11:42 p.m. Eastern time Saturday with t......

‘I hate what I did’: North Carolina man to serve 7 months for striking cop during Capitol riot

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Grayson Sherrill on Friday apologized for his actions during the Capitol riot, particularly when the-then 21-year-old Gaston County man struck a police officer with a broken metal pipe outside the building. “I really want to say that I recognize that what I did was wrong,” Sherrill, now 24, told U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in her Washington, D.C., courtroom. “I’ve had two years to really think about it. At the time, I let the chaos control what I did.” Chutkan made sure Sherrill will have some additional time for self-reflection. She sentenced the Cherryville man to sev......

‘Sick of these people.’ NC First Lady Kristin Cooper reports intruder at private home

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina first lady Kristin Cooper recently questioned the “vibrancy” of Raleigh’s Glenwood South district after a man tried to kick-in the door of her and Gov. Roy Cooper’s private home. On the neighborhood listserv, Cooper said a man tried to kick down the door of the couple’s residence in Forest Park in late April around 3 a.m. “He had no record and didn’t seem to know whose house it was,” she wrote. “Just a guy having ‘fun.’ Did anyone else have a disruption? I’m personally sick of these people roaming the streets of what is obviously a neighborhood, yelling and carr......

Two species found ‘nowhere else on the planet’ documented in western N.C, museum says

A feisty looking crustacean in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains is a new species found nowhere else in the world, according to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Called the Stony Fork Crayfish, it is one of two new species revealed in research by a team of North Carolina scientists published April 20 in Zootaxa. The other species is called the Falls Crayfish. Both creatures resemble miniature lobsters: The Stony Fork Crayfish is just under 4 inches from nose to tail, and the Falls Crayfish is slightly smaller, the museum reports. They were discovered “tucked into niches of nei......

Fortnite creator Epic Games to pay record FTC fine over violating children’s privacy

Epic Games, the creator of the popular video game Fortnite, has agreed to pay $520 million to the Federal Trade Commission over complaints that the company violated children’s privacy law and forced unintended purchases through trickery. The settlement, which the FTC announced Monday, is divided into two complaints. Epic, based in Cary, North Carolina, has agreed to pay $275 million for violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) when it used “privacy-invasive default settings and deceptive interfaces that tricked Fortnite users, including teenagers and children,” FTC Chair ......

Free thinker? Inappropriate? Child’s Halloween costume of Jan. 6 shaman sparks debate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An Instagram account best known for identifying Jan. 6 rioters turned its attention to an 11-year-old boy from Shelby this week after he won a costume contest at his school. “Homegrown Terrorists,” grabbed a screenshot of a post originally made by Brandon Gosey on Facebook featuring the child’s photo. The child was dressed up as the QAnon Shaman who stormed the Capitol, with face paint, a horned headdress, and a homemade podium. Gosey is listed as the athletic director at Pinnacle Classical Academy in Shelby and says the 11-year-old is his student. Pinnacle Classical Academy ......
