NEW YORK — ESPN used fake names to skirt Emmy Award rules and secure statuettes for on-air talent on “College GameDay,” according to a report published Thursday. “GameDay” won Sports Emmys for best studio show in 2010, 2011 and every year from 2014 to 2018. But on-air talent was not eligible to receive that specific Emmy Award until 2023, according to the rules of the Emmy-awarding National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. However, ESPN dodged that rule by adding fake associate producers to the “GameDay” credit list, then altering the engravings and passing the statuettes on to famous na......

CHICAGO — If you can hum a few bars of “Disco Duck,” have I got a show for you. It is the latest episode of the distinguished PBS “American Experience” series, which has over 35 seasons given television viewers award-winning documentaries about usually weighty subjects, as it dips into disco with an entertaining and thought-provoking hourlong trip. One reason is the presence of Chicago and a number of talking Chicagoans in the episode “The War on Disco,” as the city was the principal battleground in this “war,” with Comiskey Park literally exploding on July 12, 1979. Do you remember that night......

CHICAGO — A Chicago TV news crew reporting on a string of robberies in the city’s West Town neighborhood became the story themselves when they were robbed at gunpoint early Monday. A reporter and photographer for Spanish-language TV station Univision Chicago were filming just before 5 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue when three men wearing ski masks and brandishing firearms robbed them at gunpoint, according to the station. “They were approached with guns and robbed,” said Luis Godinez, vice president of news at Univision Chicago. “Mainly it was personal items, and they took a ......

TV creator David Jacobs, best known as the brains behind “Dallas” and spinoff “Knots Landing,” died on Sunday in Burbank, California. He was 84. The Baltimore-born writer-producer passed away just days after his Aug. 12 birthday. Son Aaron Jacobs confirmed the news to multiple outlets. “He had Alzheimer’s for many years, and recently he had recurring infections that led to his death,” the younger Jacobs told Deadline Tuesday. A nonfiction writer-turned-television mastermind, Jacobs’ small screen career started in 1977 when he penned episodes of “Kingston: Confidential” and “Family.” “Dallas” d......

Netflix has a mystery gift for its most loyal subscribers as it officially shutters its DVD-by-mail service this fall. The company, now primarily known as a streaming powerhouse, will give longtime U.S. customers a “finale” surprise — consisting of up to 10 extra discs, selected from a curated queue, that will be shipped on Sept. 29. “Let’s have some fun for our finale!” Netflix wrote in an email to customers on Thursday, which was later shared on X. “You won’t know if any extra envelopes are headed your way until they arrive in your mailbox!” Eligible customers must opt in to activate the pro......

Fans of “The View” will get another chance to take a little time and enjoy it once again — just as it is. Amid the ongoing Writers Guild and Screen Actors strikes, the daytime talk show juggernaut has confirmed it will keep its same cast of characters when it returns for its 27th season on Sept. 5. Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Ana Navarro still all have seats at the table co-created by Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie in 1997. And keeping the politically charged series intact appears to be the winning formula. According to Nielsen ratings data ......
