Manhattan neighbors blast plan to build casino alongside UN building

Hundreds of Midtown East residents voiced overwhelming opposition to a plan to build an underground casino next to the United Nations during a heated town hall Thursday evening, with shouts of “blood money” and “not here!” The plan, from the Soloviev Group, would be for a massive entertainment district dubbed “Freedom Plaza” that would include a casino, hotel, shops, open space and over 500 units of affordable housing between 38th and 41st St. beside the FDR Drive. The developers presented the plan at a public meeting hosted by state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez at the NYU College of Dentistry, with ......

Cuba is considering letting Cuban Americans own private businesses on the island

UNITED NATIONS — Cuba’s government is considering allowing Cuban Americans to invest in and own businesses on the island, Havana officials told representatives of U.S. companies and Cuban Americans from Miami who met Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel on Friday. Cuban officials said they are “contemplating it and working on legislation to get it done,” when asked about the possibility by several people attending the closed-door event at the Cuban mission to the United Nations, said Miami lawyer Ralph Patiño, who was present during the exchange. Cuba is facing a severe economic crisis and the cash-......

WHO: Artificial sweeteners have no weight-loss benefit, may raise health risks

The World Health Organization has come out against the use of non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) as a means to control weight or limit noncommunicable sickness. “The recommendation is based on the findings of a systematic review of the available evidence which suggests that use of NSS does not confer any long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children,” WHO said in a statement Monday. That review also determined long-term use of NSS could contribute to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and serious illness in adults. “Replacing free sugars with NSS does not help with weight control ......

Mexico bans smoking in public, one of world’s strictest anti-tobacco laws

Mexico now bans smoking in hotels, beaches, parks and all other public spaces — one of the world’s strictest laws of its kind. The General Law for Tobacco Control reform, which took effect on Sunday, also prohibits businesses from promoting, advertising or sponsoring tobacco products, including putting them on display for sale. The law expands a 2008 ban on smoking in bars, restaurants and workplaces. Similar restrictions will fall on e-cigarettes and vaping. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus applauded the policy. “Bravo Mexico!” he said on Twitter. “WHO wel......

US will support sending ‘multinational rapid action force’ to Haiti

The United States has drafted a United Nations Security Council resolution that will encourage the “immediate deployment of a multinational rapid action force” to Haiti to address the nation’s worst security and health crisis in decades, according to a copy of the resolution obtained by McClatchy and the Miami Herald. The draft resolution, confirmed by multiple U.S. and U.N. officials, comes in response to a call by U.N. Secretary General António Guterres last week for the establishment of a rapid reaction force to assist the Haitian National Police. Over the past four weeks, powerful armed ga......

As violence worsens in Haiti, United Nations orders evacuation of non-essential staff

The United Nations is ordering the evacuation of all non-essential international workers from Haiti, citing ongoing violence that has left workers vulnerable to kidnapping and attacks last week on U.N.-backed food warehouses across the country. The evacuation order comes two months after the U.N. Security Council voted to extend the mandate of its Integrated Office in Haiti by a year and expand staffing, and ahead of a meeting Monday on the situation in Haiti. The United States is floating a resolution that would establish a new framework for sanctioning Haiti’s gang leaders, as well as those ......
