The Republican operative has spent a long career courting attention as a no-holds-barred puppet master who can tap the American voter's darkest impulses. Until things got a little too hot in the Mueller investigation—prompting Stone to deny everything he didn't say in writing, all of which was a joke.
Stone's long association with Donald Trump, including during the 2016 campaign, and his open courting of Russian hackers on Twitter, put Stone in Mueller's crosshairs. News just broke that one of Stone's social media consultants was being subpoenaed. So he went on Laura Ingraham's show Thursday night to do what Stone does best—deflect, deny and spin.
Ingraham, who at several points confessed herself to be a huge fan of his work, gave him free range.
"At this point I'm not sure if I'm a person of interest or just an interesting person," Stone told a chuckling Ingraham.
Stone said the hack of the Democratic National Committee's email server, which produced emails that were used to fracture the Democratic party before the convention.
"I don't think it happened at all—never mind by the Russians," Stone said of the hack.
Stone did not make it clear why he thought the hack never happened, and Ingraham did not ask.
Stone also cast doubt on his former colleague Sam Nunberg's contention that he met with Wikileaks Julian Assange.
"When you work with Sam Nunberg, sometimes he would call you 20, 30, 40 times a day," Stone claimed. "I wanted to get him off the phone."
"It's called stalking!" Ingraham said.
Which is why Stone told Nunberg that he was flying to London to meet with Julian Assange—and then kept repeating it.
"It's shtick, it's a throwaway line, it's a joke!" he claimed. "And then when I figured out he believed it I milked the joke in an email."
