'They fall sometimes!' Morbid Trump takes a dark turn as workers perch above his ballroom

President Donald Trump took a dark turn Wednesday as workers set the final steel beam high above his White House ballroom, musing aloud about what happens when they fall.

As two construction workers stood atop a steel beam, Trump, surrounded by reporters, blurted out a warning about the dangers of standing in high places on construction sites.

“You know what? They fall sometimes! And when they fall, it’s terrible,” Trump was heard saying.

The remark came during Trump’s first on-camera appearance since Republicans’ historic midterm collapse. Rather than address the results, the president touted the ballroom, telling reporters he finds construction “relaxing” because he “loves construction.”

“It’s got to be pristine,” Trump said of the White House. “It’s got to be perfect.”

Trump first announced the ballroom in July 2025 with a $200 million price tag, then razed the entire East Wing that October to make way for the 90,000-square-foot structure. He has since put the cost at $400 million — all of it, he insists, covered by private donors — though records reported in June showed a $600 million estimate, with half coming from taxpayers.

The demolition, carried out without congressional approval, also sparked a lawsuit that has dragged the project through the courts.

The ballroom is just one of several projects Trump has launched to remake Washington, alongside a new South Lawn helipad and a planned triumphal arch at Memorial Circle. Altogether, the price tag for his White House construction has ballooned to nearly $1 billion, Truthout reported.
