Iowa is in play for Democrats in large part because there is a major feeling of betrayal by the state’s farmers aimed at President Donald Trump.
In an interview with MS NOW’s Alex Tabet, Iowa Farmers' Union President Aaron Lehman bluntly stated that the president's policies, including a new plan to bring in imported beef, are doing nothing to help them out of their financial straits and are only making matters worse.
In a clip shown on MS NOW’s “On The Line,“ the exasperated Lehman told Tabet, “It's ridiculous that we have taken now the time when so many farmers are under economic stress to make it easier for product to come into our country, that our farmers want to grow, to bring more product from overseas.”
“That's not what consumers want, and it doesn't help our farmers at all. In fact, it puts us at a huge disadvantage. It's a huge move in the wrong direction.”
Mark Mueller, the president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, echoed those sentiments.
“I'm biting the bullet,” he told Tabet. “I'm cutting down everywhere I can. I'm reducing my expenses; I went to no-till farming, which means fewer trips back and forth across the field with machinery. That's one good way.”
“But now that I'm already doing no-till farming, what is there left for me to cut back?” he asked.
