President Donald Trump's foot-dragging on releasing hundreds of millions of dollars for the midterms is now causing real distress among the deep-pocketed donors who bankrolled him.
According to Politico, money is trickling out of Trump's MAGA Inc. super PAC, but as September begins, Republican donors say it "should be gushing."
The group sent Vice President JD Vance to Michigan on Monday to campaign for Senate candidate Mike Rogers and spent more than $827,000 to boost Sen. Darline Graham's successful South Carolina primary runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman.
But that's about it.
Seven GOP donors and fundraisers granted anonymity told Politico that's nowhere near enough from a PAC sitting on a $400 million war chest as midterm election season enters September and time is quickly running out.
"With the president’s poll numbers near record lows and Democratic voters appearing more enthused, GOP donors believe no resource should go untapped," the report notes, with one exasperated donor lamenting, "Our threat level should be up and people are going to have an expectation that you deploy all your resources. He’s sitting on hundreds of millions of dollars, not doing that. We’re in September.”
MAGA Inc. raised $18 million in June and just $3 million in July, with no commitment from Trump's team on how much will actually be spent this cycle, Politico is reporting.
"Oh my God, it's September — this guy is not going to spend the money," one Trump fundraiser and former administration official said.
A second donor was even more blunt.
"I think most people think he's not going to spend anything but a slice of it. This is for him, this is for his purposes. It's not about getting other Republicans elected. He doesn't care about that."
