'Zeroed out': Trump plans to shut down critical crime unit — and no one knows why

President Donald Trump's administration is moving to shut down a critical Department of Justice unit fighting organized crime and drug trafficking that dates all the way back to the Reagan administration, Bloomberg News reported — and there doesn't seem to be any clear reason why.

The leaders of this unit, known as the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), received notice that all operations must wind down by September 30, and "An email sent last Monday by a DOJ budget analyst to a counterpart at OCDETF said that the unit’s fiscal year 2026 budget would be 'zeroed out' and the independent office dissolved, according to records obtained by Bloomberg News in response to a Freedom of Information Act request and the people familiar with the matter."

'Nanny daycare!' Fox News analyst melts down over Dem opposition to Alcatraz

Fox News commentary is already going to bat for President Donald Trump's off-the-cuff proposal to reopen the long-defunct federal prison on Alcatraz Island — and smacking down Democratic criticism of the idea. Gregg Jarrett led the charge on Monday's edition of "Fox & Friends."

"You know, progressives frown on prisons, they tend to favor nanny daycare for hardened criminals," said Jarrett, who has gotten into his own trouble with the law in the past, "and Alcatraz, pretty forbidding, frigid place, housed Al Capone, 'Machine Gun' Mickey Cohen. It is, however, federal property, so this can be done." He did, however, acknowledge, it would have to be "rebuilt almost entirely."
