House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) could push Donald Trump over the edge if he ignores “pressure” from the president to prevent the seating of a Democratic majority in the House.
During an appearance on MS NOW with host Peter Alexander, former Trump deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews pointed out that Americans saw what happened when Trump didn’t get his way on Jan 6, 2020, and losing both chambers of Congress next week might lead to a replay.
After watching a clip of Johnson telling reporters, “The Constitution says when a state certifies the election of members of Congress, and they administered the oath, that's what I'll be doing on January 3rd to everybody who's there. I may not like some of those outcomes, but that's our system. And for anybody to suggest otherwise is absurd," Matthews was asked to weigh in.
“I think the last time we saw Donald Trump lose an election, we saw an insurrection at our nation's Capitol, so it is not a silly question," she told Alexander.
“It is a very real scenario that we have to prepare for and that we have to act,” she cautioned. “I appreciate his answer and him saying that he's going to abide by the Constitution, but he's probably going to face immense pressure from Trump in the days after the election.”
“I think that Trump is going to be upset, particularly if Democrats regain control of the Senate,” she predicted. “I think it's more than likely that Democrats will regain control of the House; the Senate is still up in the air, but Trump is going to absolutely spiral if that's the case. And Speaker Mike Johnson is going to face a lot of pressure from him.”
