Veteran Republican political consultant, author, and Lincoln Project senior advisor Stuart Stephens appeared on Tuesday night's edition of MSNBC's Alex Wagner Tonight and explained to the namesake host and her audience why the GOP deserves to bear the scars of former President Donald Trump's legal predicaments.
Wagner had just finished reviewing an NBC News poll which showed that a third of Republican primary voters are choosing loyal to Trump over the party. She wondered if the survey indicated that the GOP is "making a mistake when they assume that defending Trump is their only option?"
Stephens broke down why there is no aberration.
"You know, I think that poll is a little misleading because the Republican party has become Donald Trump. So it, it, it's not really much of a choice. There's no anti-Trump movement of any size in the Republican party. What happens if you oppose Trump? You're, you're Liz Cheney. They throw a Cheney out of the party. So it's an easy thing to say, 'well, I don't support Donald Trump. You know, I support the party more than Donald Trump,' when you're really saying the same thing," Stevens said.
"Look, I, this is where the Republican Party has ended up. It began when they accepted Donald Trump. When Donald Trump went out and called for a Muslim ban in December of 2015, everyone knew in the party that if the party stood for anything, it was the Constitution. This was a religious test. They knew this, but they didn't stand up to Trump," he continued.
"And you know, there was this thing that the Republican Party used to say when I worked in it, that character counts, and that was right," Stevens added. "And this is now all unfolding and it's just beginning. After the majority of the Republican party does not believe that Joe Biden is a legally elected president. So play that out. What does it mean? It means they live in an occupied country. So that only not only gives them a reason to do whatever it takes. To some, it gives them an obligation. And I, I think this is, it's just beginning. I think the Republican Party is shameful and not standing up for the rule of law, which is what this is. The reason there's a former president being indicted is because the Republican party nominated and elected a criminal. No more complicated than that."

A pair of gate agents at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport have been arrested, and two more are wanted, after an incident in which they were caught on camera throwing a passenger's carry-on luggage in the trash, according to WWL — reportedly including expensive medication and jewelry.
"Keyonne Brooks said he left his carry-on bag at the Spirit Airlines gate counter on February 19 as he was headed back to Los Angeles after attending his uncle's funeral in New Orleans. Brooks said he got into a disagreement with the gate agent over doing a gate check of his large suitcase," said the report. "'She said that I'd have to reschedule my flight instead of doing a gate check, and I knew that was not true because of my travels with my nonprofit,' Brooks said. He asked for a manager and paid an extra fee to take it on the plane, but he forgot his small carry on at the desk. He was told to file a lost and found report when he got home, but when his carry-on never showed up there, he requested the video from the airport."
The video showed the workers, some of whom Brooks had never interacted with, dumping out the luggage, including his medication, family heirloom jewelry, and his keys, all while laughing and taking pictures with their cell phones. "I still have not been able to watch the entire video, because it's just too gut wrenching for me," Brooks told WWL. "Knowing the medication I had in there is very expensive, very hard to get and I needed it. It's taken a lot out of me."

Willie Stovall III, 31, and Ebone Baker, 22 are in custody, and two other gate employees, Antoinaija Beasley, 22, and Alshea Mitchell, 30, are being sought by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. They face charges of felony theft.
Spirit Airlines has publicly apologized for the incident, saying in a statement, "Spirit Airlines is committed to treating all Guests with respect and delivering high-quality service, and we will take appropriate action as necessary following the completion of the vendor's investigation. Spirit has already issued a refund for the flight on February 23, and the vendor is expediting the compensation for the items."
This comes after another incident last year in which another Spirit gate agent at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was suspended after video showed him getting into a physical fight with a passenger.

Trump should have known his attorney-client privilege claim was going nowhere. Here's why

Some legal experts expressed surprise Wednesday after a federal appeals court ruled that an attorney representing Donald Trump in the classified documents case must provide notes, transcripts and other evidence to prosecutors, but the former president should have seen it coming.
That’s according to former FBI General Counsel Andrew Weissmann, who said that a 2017 ruling involving Trump’s former campaign manager provided a road map to U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell’s Wednesday ruling that Evan Corcoran must provide evidence to prosecutors under the crime-fraud exception.
Howell cited the crime-fraud exception in her 2017 ruling that an attorney representing former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and political consultant Rick Gates was required to testify in the Mueller probe.
Trump’s lawyers had sought to block a federal judge’s order last week ordering Corcoran to turning over evidence to special counsel Jack Smith.
“I think she must have been feeling very confident that there's just no argument here, that this is either attorney-client privilege, and even if it is that if the crime fraud exception applies, and there's a very simple rule, which is you cannot commit a crime using your lawyer,” Weissman said Wednesday during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House.”
“That does not make something privileged,” Weissman added.
“And so you would think Donald Trump could have looked at what happened with Manafort, seen that the judge ordered the exact same thing and learned his lesson, but apparently he didn’t.”
