(Reuters) - Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday appeared ahead of the NBA All-Star Game and appealed for Americans to take COVID-19 vaccines, as President Joe Biden's administration seeks to counter vaccine hesitancy among African Americans. "I'm urging everyone to get the vaccine when it is your turn. I've taken the vaccine," said Harris, the first Black American to serve as vice president, in clips from a conversation with actor and producer Michael B. Jordan broadcast ahead of the game. "It's about understanding that it's bigger than you. It really is an extension of love thy neighbor an...
The Albany Times Union on Friday published a scathing editorial denouncing Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) for embracing a watered down version of the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory espoused by white supremacists.
The Times Union took particular issue with Stefanik releasing a new ad claiming that Democrats support creating a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants because they want to create a "permanent election insurrection" against Americans.
The editors note the parallels between this rhetoric and the neo-Nazis who chanted, "Jews will not replace us!" during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.
"The Harvard-educated Ms. Stefanik surely knows the sordid history and context of this," the editors write. "At various times, politicians have warned that Catholics, Jews, or Muslims were out to change the "culture," or that Irish, Italian, Asian or eastern European immigrants would take the jobs — to 'replace' white, Protestant Americans."
The editors conclude by saying that Stefanik and her "hateful rhetoric" need to be replaced more than anything else currently threatening the United States.
Former Vice President Mike Pence apparently thinks he can win over millions of Trump voters, despite the fact that several of those voters called for his hanging during the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol building.
CNN reports that Pence is laying the ground for a run at the White House in 2024, and he's not going to wait around to see what former President Donald Trump does before making his move.
"Mike is going to look at this and say, 'Where am I being called to serve?'" a source whom CNN described as "close to Pence" explained. "That's not going to be thwarted by any man or woman. If he feels called to do this, it's not going to be because of who else is in the race."
Pence's relationship with Trump has deteriorated ever since Trump tried to get Pence to refuse to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.
This led Trump to attack Pence publicly ahead of the January 6th riots -- and Trump supporters responded by chanting "Hang Mike Pence!" as they stormed the Capitol building.
David Kochel, an Iowa-based Republican campaign strategist, tells CNN that Pence might be making a big mistake if he thinks he can get away with running in 2024 without earning the wrath of Trump supporters.
"He's the most uniquely connected to Trump of anyone in the field, in ways both helpful and unhelpful," he said. "Nobody would be more affected by a Trump comment than Pence, and nobody more vulnerable to a Trump run."
'I have a right to my self-determination!' MAGA rioter starts 'screaming' after judge sends her to jail
Alleged MAGA rioter Pauline Bauer reportedly had a full-on public meltdown on Friday when a judge ordered that she be sent back to prison ahead of her trial.
NBC 4 Washington's Scott MacFarlane reports that Bauer, who has echoed the rhetoric of so-called "sovereign citizens" in previous court filings, had her pre-trial release revoked after federal prosecutors documented how she has refused to follow court orders during her release.
During the hearing, writes MacFarlane, Bauer regularly challenged the court's authority to hold her in any kind of custody, even though she denied being part of the sovereign citizen movement.
"I have a right to my self-determination!" she told the judge at one point.
Bauer also told the judge that she is not subject to the court's supervision and twice said that the court was trying to put her "in the water" even though she's chosen to be "on the land."
According to MacFarlane, the judge overhearing her case was not impressed with her arguments and ordered her sent to prison ahead of her trial.
"The problem is she's not going to do what I direct her to do," the judge explained. "Ms. Bauer is now going to be incarcerated."
MacFarlane writes that Bauer started "screaming" as soon as the judge asked U.S. Marshalls to take her into custody.
