*UPDATED: Multiple sources are now saying reports of Jericho's death was a false alarm. Brent Stapelkamp of the Hwange Lion Research Project told the London Evening Standard that Jericho, who also wears a GPS tag, is moving around.
"He looks alive and well to me as far as I can tell," he told the Standard.
The brother of slain Cecil the lion, known as Jericho, was killed today in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, reports the International Business Times.
According to authorities, Jericho was shot by a hunter operating illegally, said Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.
"It is with great sadness and regret that we report that Jericho was shot dead at 4pm this afternoon. We have no further details but will advise as soon as we know more. We are absolutely heartbroken," Rodrigues said in a statement.
Cecil was also killed illegally, and Zimbabwe is seeking the extradition of American dentist Walter Palmer on accusations that he and others illegally hunted the lion, authorities said.
This is a developing story and will be updated soon.
