A "Daily Show" correspondent was shocked to learn just how half-assed and slapped-together the American voting system actually is.
Ronny Chieng, a native of Malaysia, spoke with elections officials and experts about the voting process, and found that many states use out-of-date and unreliable equipment that cause confusion, delays and a potential for rigged elections.
"No, the voting system is perfect -- please don't ruin this for me," Chieng insisted, plugging his ears with his fingers. "La la la la."
Elections officials in some states buy replacement parts for these "shitty" machines in online auctions.
“So you’re basically getting shitty technology from Ebay, second-hand?” Chieng said.
An official in Michigan showed him a dialup 56k modem still in use during elections, and Chieng said even his "grandmother back in Malaysia would look at this and go, 'What the f*ck?'"
He said reports on voting problems by civic justice advocates could be summed up in four words: "Voting machines are f*cked."
