After a judge threw out Shelly Simonds one-vote win over GOP incumbent David Yancey Wednesday, Virginians who didn't go to the polls in November are expressing their regrets.

As The Virginian-Pilot reports, more than half of Newport News' 52,753 registered voters failed to cast ballots in the off-year House of Delegates race.

"We usually do vote, but this year it just got away from us," Newport News resident Luke Bohac said. "If only we’d gone."

Karen Martin told the paper that she and her husband Chad typically vote, but had difficulty choosing which candidate to pick this year because they know both Simonds and Yancey personally.

"It just goes to show you," Martin, a resident and boutique owner in Hilton Village, said. "It really does matter."

As of December 20, Simonds and Yancey are tied with 11,608 votes each.
