In an interview with Politico, a former prosecutor who worked with Andrew Weissmann said his imminent departure from special counsel Robert Mueller's team is a sign that the final draft detailing the investigation into President Donald Trump has likely been reviewed and could be released within weeks.
Earlier this week, Mueller's office announced several members of the team were being assigned, but the announced departure of Weissmann drew special attention due to his status as a dogged prosecutor of organized crime.
According to Patrick Cotter, a former federal prosecutor who previously worked with Weissmann, his announced departure indicates the end is near.
"The signs I see are all pointing towards an investigation that is wrapping up,” Cotter explained. “[We are] probably a few weeks or even a month or more away from the issuing of a final report, but certainly a fairly complete draft is already being circulated inside the Mueller team.”
Cotter went on to say that he would be stunned if Weissmann would leave without seeing and adding input into the final report.
“His knowledge, experience and skills are too great for Mueller not to use him as a leading author of such a report. And I do not believe he would leave if he thought major new veins of information and significant charges were still to come.”
