Rep. Peter King (R-NY), a close ally of Rudy Giuliani, said Thursday that the former New York City mayor is closer than ever to running for president in 2012.

"As of this moment, he's very much inclined to run," King told Fox News' Gretchen Carlson. "I would say right now, he's very close to running now."

"In the last campaign, I had some involvement in it and I would say the main problem last time was nobody let Rudy be Rudy. He had all these layers and layers of advisers telling him how to avoid controversy," he added. "My feeling is that if you are going to elect Rudy Giuliani president, it's because you want a tough guy... I think that would appeal across the board, including to the tea party members."

King seemed to be doubling down on remarks he made to reporters Monday.

"If he were to make the decision today, he would run," he had explained.
