CODEPINK’s Medea Benjamin interrupts Brennan to condemn drone strikes

Published

on

Medea Benjamin, the co-founder of the anti-war group CODEPINK, interrupted a speech by White House counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan on Monday.

While Brennan was speaking, Benjamin stood up in the audience and began giving her own speech for more than one minute.

“What about the hundreds of innocent people we are killing with our drone strikes in Pakistan and in Yemen and Somalia?” she said. “I speak out on behalf of those innocent victims. They deserve an apology from you Mr. Brennan. How many people are you willing to sacrifice, why are you lying to the American people and not saying how many innocents have been killed?”

“I speak out on behalf of the Constitution,” Benjamin continued, while she was being dragged out of the auditorium by security guards. “I love the rule of law, I love my country. You are making us less safe by killing so many innocent people around the world.”

During his speech, Brennan defended U.S. drone strikes against Taliban and al Qaeda militants. The Obama Administration had been notably silent on using drones to target suspected terrorists.

“So let me say it as simply as I can,” Brennan said. “Yes, in full accordance with the law—and in order to prevent terrorist attacks on the United States and to save American lives—the United States Government conducts targeted strikes against specific al-Qa’ida terrorists, sometimes using remotely piloted aircraft, often referred to publicly as drones. And I’m here today because President Obama has instructed us to be more open with the American people about these efforts.”

Members of a "Back the Blue" rally were seen fighting with Black Lives Matter counter-protesters in Fort Collins, Colorado over the weekend.

Video posted on social media shows members of the "Back the Blue" group advancing on Black Lives Matter activists. The confrontation eventually becomes a fighting match in a neighborhood ditch.

"Everybody keep their hands off their weapons!" one man can be heard shouting. "Keep punching each other in the face. Don't shoot anybody."

Ciara Wilson posted video of the confrontation on Instagram.

"I was at the Pro Police FCPD rally today," she wrote. "Counter protestors were violently beaten and had no signs of aggression or hostility. Pro Police protestors forced them to the end of the block and then savagely assaulted them. Afterwards the COUNTER PROTESTORS WERE DETAINED. The officers did not tell them why they were being detained. The pro police protestors who literally assaulted these people for no fucking reason other than being PSYCHOPATHS got away with it. I am so sick and tired of this."
