MSNBC host Rachel Maddow on Wednesday night explained how Republicans had tried but failed to refute the assertion that they were waging a "war on women."

"The problem with women voters is the problem Republicans have been trying to fix," she said, noting that a very large percent of women favored Obama over Romney.

Republican National Committee chief Reince Priebus had denied that his party was waging a war on women, saying it was as fictional as the “war on caterpillars.”

Maddow noted that after that line of attack failed, Priebus had said the phrase "war on women" was borderline unpatriotic.

"That turned out to also be a problem, because he is the spokesman for the Republican Party, which has been accusing President Obama of waging a war on everything from religion to coal," she said.
