Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks on Wednesday explained how Katherine Eban of Fortune unveiled the "reals story" behind the Fast and Furious scandal.
"It is amazing what we didn't know," he said. "It is also amazing what the Obama administration admitted to when it wasn't true."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) allegedly sold thousands of assault rifles and revolvers to traffickers suspected of being linked to Mexican drug cartels with the intent of tracking the firearms. However, according to Fortune's lengthy investigation, which reviewed more than 2,000 pages of confidential ATF documents, that is completely false. The agency never purposefully allowed guns to be sold to Mexican cartels to monitor their movement.
The ATF had wanted to stop drug smugglers from using Arizona as a "gun supermarket" and seized weapons when they could, but the agency was neutered by toothless gun laws. The ATF tried to investigate alleged gun runners, but federal prosecutors did not indict a single suspect.
Because of this, the ATF was forced to keep suspects under surveillance even after they had purchased hundreds of guns, which lead to allegations that the agency was willingly allowing the guns to be trafficked.
