Pennsylvania man shoots girlfriend in face after she leaves to get GED

A Pennsylvania man was in critical condition on Monday after he allegedly shot his girlfriend and her brother over the weekend, following a breakup that the victim hoped would be the start of a new life, which included getting her GED.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Keira Aviles-Rivera was helping to unload gifts from a neighbor's sweet 16 birthday party on Saturday when ex-boyfriend Anthony Rivera (no relation) showed up to confront her for breaking up with him a few days earlier.

Witnesses said that neighbors were watching as 19-year-old Anthony Rivera pulled out a gun and shot Keira Aviles-Rivera. She was able to run to her home across the street, where the gunman apparently also followed and shot her brother, 21-year-old Joezer Quinones-Rivera.

Neighbor Markita Hines told the Philadelphia Daily News that Anthony Rivera came walking out of the house "like nothing happened."

Anthony Rivera was later stopped by police at around 3:20 a.m. on Sunday because he matched the description of the suspect. The report said that the suspect pulled a gun causing the officer to fire.

During a chase, Anthony Rivera dropped his gun and was eventually caught. But while he was being handcuffed, he allegedly reached for the officer's gun. The officer responded by shooting him in the back.

Police spokesperson Lt. John Stanford said that the District Attorney's Office was reviewing the shooting and that the officer and been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in all shootings.

Keira Aviles-Rivera, Joezer Quinones-Rivera and Anthony Rivera were all reportedly in critical condition on Monday.

"She wanted to go back to school and get her high-school diploma after she left nutbucket," neighbor Bernice Hines explained to the paper. "You can't leave nobody that's obsessed over you like that 'cause they won't allow you to live nowhere else 'cause in their mind she got somebody else."

"When they do something like that to a woman's face, they're trying to disfigure her so no other man will look at her."
