A pair of conservative commentators on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" trashed Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) for being the lone holdout against an anti-Asian hate crimes bill.
The bill passed 94-1 in a rare moment of bipartisan unity, and conservative Matt Lewis ripped the Missouri Republican's vote against the bill, which comes in the wake of a spike in violence and harassment against Asian-Americans since the coronavirus pandemic began.
"To put it in context, Ted Cruz thought this was a good idea, was persuaded to, ultimately, with amendments," Lewis said. "Tom Cotton thought this was worth voting for, so these are pretty conservative Republicans who voted for it. Josh Hawley did not, and I think this has more to do with the fact that he is staking out, as kind of one man, nobody to the right of me turf, and this is not the first time we've seen this happen in the case of some confirmations, where Josh Hawley is just staking out this pretty extreme territory, and I guess the bet is that when he runs for president in 2024, one of these issues will be potent and he'll invoke it, probably in a debate against Ted Cruz. But, yeah, he is a very lonely voice this morning."
Elise Jordan, a former White House and State Department aide in the Bush administration, agreed.
"I want to second what Matt said about Josh Hawley going out of his way to really out-Cruz Ted Cruz, which is quite something," she said, "and you have to really work hard to try to be more loathe than Ted cruz, but Josh Hawley seems to have decided that is his way and his glide path to the Republican nomination."

It's been one year since former President Donald Trump suggested that scientists investigate the possibility of injecting people with disinfectants to cure the novel coronavirus, and one former Trump official tells Politico that they saw that particular public relations trainwreck coming from a mile away.
The former official, who insisted on anonymity in order to be candid, said they were weary of letting Trump talk at the daily coronavirus briefing on April 23rd, 2020 because he had just been briefed on how quickly disinfectant could kill the virus.
In fact, the official said they went so far as to implore fellow aides to stop the president from taking the podium.
"A few of us actually tried to stop it in the West Wing hallway," they said. "I actually argued that President Trump wouldn't have the time to absorb it and understand it. But I lost, and it went how it did."
Another former Trump official tells Politico that many White House staffers secretly mocked Trump for rambling about the possibility of miracle bleach cures.
"People joked about it inside the White House like, 'Are you drinking bleach and injecting sunlight?' People were mocking it," the official explained. "It honestly hurt. It was a credibility issue... It was hurting us even from an international standpoint, the credibility at the White House."
According to a report from KOB4, the city of Albuquerque is sending former president Donald Trump to collection over unpaid bills dating back to a rally he held in the city in 2019.
At issue is close to $200,000 in security costs the city incurred after Trump spent the night in local hotel as well as the costs of "blocking off parts of downtown, paying police officers overtime and covering the paid time off expenses of city workers who had to stay home.," the report states.
According to Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, "We actually treated it like any other debt, and so it goes through a somewhat process where you send a bunch of letters out. We got no response from those letters. And then automatically, it does go to an agency that helps try and collect debts, and so that's those annoying phone calls you get that say, you know, you owe money to so-and-so like now, Trump is getting those."
"Given what else has happened, I mean in terms of, even his own campaign owing money to donors and lots of shady stuff there, so unfortunately I don't really expect us to get paid. But it's important that we do, and you know, we would do it for anyone else, so he's no different," he added.
According to KOB4, they reached out to Trump's people for comment and were told their request was under "review."
