As conservative politicians and commentators rushed to distance themselves from Cliven Bundy’s plainly racist remarks, Twitter conservatives offered their defense of the scofflaw rancher.
Some supporters accused media liberals of playing the race card by reporting or criticizing his offensive comments.
Ah, took a while but out comes the race card against Bundy. #Predictable.... #bundyranch

Harry Reid: "Did you get my Land yet?"
BLM : "No they have guns & Bundy won't give up. What should we do?"
Harry Reid: What else #RaceCard

Talk radio host Dana Loesch was one of the first professional pundits to defend Bundy, arguing the rancher lacked the media training necessary to clearly express himself without wondering whether black people were better off as slaves.
“He seems to be decrying what big government has done to the black family — which big government has negatively affected not just the black family, but all families regardless of ethnicity — so perhaps he included that in his remarks against big government?” Loesch said.
Loesch expressed “a healthy suspicion” of the New York Times as the source of these comments, and her doubts were echoed by many others displaying varying levels of healthy skepticism.
@SenRandPaul Was Cliven Bundy in on it, or forced to act like a brain dead hillbilly racist at the behest of the Government. Scam?

NYT reports racist comments made by Bundy, presumably undermining his claims. If it's illegal to be racist, it'll be mass suicide at MSNBC.
— Larry Elder (@larryelder) April 24, 2014
@adamnagourney do you have video footage of Bundy's press conference that you wrote about? thank you.
— kimberly drake (@kakiana) April 24, 2014
If there is a video of Cliven Bundy saying racist things then Ill believe it, but i wont accept the word of a NYT hitman.
— DJ BETTLER (@WARPUG) April 24, 2014
So Cliven Bundy made racist comments, to who? What news source? He was ranting on his land but then driving in Vegas? No video? Picture?
— Carolyn Porter (@CarolynnP) April 24, 2014
@glennbeck you're saying Bundy said this yet there is no audio/video at all? #SoundsLegit Because @msnbc wouldn't air it 24/7 if it existed.

Some got hung up on Bundy’s use of the word, “Negro,” and were reminded of Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) – considered a villain by the rancher’s supporters – widely covered use of the word several years ago.
FLASH! Nevadan who is not #ClivenBundy uses word "Negro" unironically without firestorm erupting. @instapundit https://t.co/l5Z10UN3Pz
— Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) April 24, 2014
@nvdems condemn #Bundy "negro" comments. Silent on Harry Reid's "negro" comments. #lvrj Both condemnable, no?
— Sherman Frederick (@shermfrederick) April 24, 2014
Some supporters said Bundy’s loathsome views on race did nothing to diminish his cause.
Even if it can be proven that Cliven Bundy is a bona fide racist, it doesn't strip him of his individual rights. This is America. #tcot
— Cactus Howl (@CactusHowl) April 24, 2014
@LeonHWolf @eriContrarian I don't care if Bundy is the most racist person in the world. The BLS is wrong - and abusive - and he is right.
— Bryan Costin (@bcostin) April 24, 2014
Saying Bundy is a racist means the BLM is justified is like saying Mark Furhman used the N-word means OJ Simpson didn't kill his wife.
— talkradio200 (@talkradio200) April 24, 2014
How does Bundy's horrible racism change his dispute with the government, exactly?
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) April 24, 2014
Snowden being a traitor did not change importance of his revelations. Bundy being a racist does not change importance of his situation.
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) April 24, 2014
Others betrayed a misunderstanding of racism – and a persistent misunderstanding of the difference between “prejudice” and “prejudiced.”
Bundy "comments"= Racist, Planned Parenthood actually killing minority babies 5:1 = Not Racist #BiggerThanBundy
— TKHLiberty (@TKHLiberty) April 24, 2014
@Charvettebey Bundy's comments weren't racist, they were ignorant & prejudice. Unless u can tell what "power" he holds ovr AfrAms...
— DeeYo (@Dyoung1208) April 24, 2014
Still others, of course, offered their own racist statements.
@daveweigel The point: Under slavery, blacks were united against a common enemy. Today, they kill each other. Whose fault is that? Bundy's?
— Phillip McAllister (@PhillipMcAllist) April 24, 2014
"Are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.” That is sympathy, not disparagment.
— Patrick Dollard (@PatDollard) April 24, 2014
Media Matters posted video Thursday morning of Bundy making the remarks quoted by the New York Times:
Update: However, the video raised addition questions for some of Bundy's supporters.
Media Matters has what they call "the video" of #ClivenBundy's "negro" remarks. Looks AWFULLY suspicious to me. Gang? https://t.co/swAAOeLti3
