Conservative activist Ben Shapiro has engaged in an online protest against the Mozilla Firefox browser in response to the departure of co-founder Brendan Eich.

Visitors using the Firefox browser were unable as of Thursday night to visit Shapiro's website, TruthRevolt.org. Instead, they were greeted with a message urging them to use another browser, and to sign a petition "vowing to uninstall or cease using Mozilla."

"Pardon this interruption of your TruthRevolt experience," the message read. "Mozilla recently forced its CEO, Brendan Eich, to resign over his personal support for traditional marriage. The firing followed a vicious smear campaign against Eich by dating website OKCupid, in which OKCupid blocked Mozilla users from visiting their website."

The message is a response to a similar boycott by the dating site OKCupid last week, in response to the news that Eich had donated $1,000 in support of Proposition 8, the California law banning marriage equality, in 2008. Mozilla employees also called for Eich to resign over his support of the law.

Despite initially insisting he would not resign, Mozilla confirmed on Thursday that he did indeed step down.
