Jon Stewart: Good luck getting the US to face up to ‘deluge of depravity’ in CIA torture report

Published

on

Daily Show host Jon Stewart laughed off the idea on Tuesday that the U.S. would be ready to face up to the findings of a report detailing the CIA’s torture practices following the 9/11 attacks.

“You want us to do that?” Stewart asked incredulously. “Yeah, we’ll face that ugly truth in just a second, I just want to figure out, how do they get the cheese in the crust — that’s what I want to know.”

Stewart showed footage of Senate Intelligence Committee chair Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) announcing several of the findings from the report, which uncovered that at least 26 of the 119 detainees subjected to threats and bodily harm were being held wrongfully.

The “deluge of depravity,” as Stewart called it, led him to illustrate his feelings with shots of a character vomiting from the film Monty Python’s Meaning of Life:

Stewart, whose directorial debut Rosewater dealt with journalist Maziar Bahari’s own brush with an interrogator, looked particularly uncomfortable hearing about American detainees’ food being “rectally infused.”

“You know, it’s funny: I just made this movie about a guy who triumphs over the inhuman conditions in his imprisonment in an authoritarian country, and I don’t think they did half that sh*t to him,” Stewart said.

Stewart also noted that the report was released a day after President Barack Obama’s appearance on The Colbert Report.

“To be fair to the president, he was great on Colbert last night,” Stewart said. “By the way, my guess is scheduling was not a coincidence.”

Meghan McCain gets fact-checked on new Kavanaugh accuser — and asks if Clarence Thomas got impeached

Published

"The View" host Whoopi Goldberg had to fact-check Meghan McCain's description of a New York Times correction in a bombshell new report about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The newspaper reported that the FBI failed to interview former Yale classmates about sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh during the confirmation process last fall, and the authors of a new book found a new accuser.

McCain pointed to an editor's note appended to the story that she believes casts doubt on the new reporting, but Goldberg asked her to clean up some of the claims she made.

The Republican Party is a ‘cult’ that isn’t even letting its own voters have a say anymore: Joe Walsh

Published

on

On CNN Monday, former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) blasted the GOP for shutting down state primaries to block him from mounting a challenge to President Donald Trump.

"Look, we can’t be numb to this," said Walsh. "I know it’s difficult because this president seemingly every day attacks our democracy, but we have to be outraged. I always want to pinch myself and remind myself that this isn’t Russia. I do not live in Russia. I refuse to live in Russia. We can’t just cancel elections in this country. That’s what Donald Trump is doing. He’s literally canceling elections, and it’s very easy to be pissed off at Trump, but we’re used to this with Trump. He is a would-be dictator. He would like this to be Russia. I’ve got to tell you, I’m blown away in my disappointment with the Republican Party who is in cahoots with this president, and again, literally eliminating elections."

Trump gets busted for shamelessly lying about wanting to meet with Iran without preconditions

Published

on

President Donald Trump this week denied that he wants to meet with Iranian government officials without any preconditions -- but a quick fact check has revealed this to be a shameless lie.

In a tweet sent out on Sunday night, the president wrote that "The Fake News is saying that I am willing to meet with Iran, 'No Conditions.' That is an incorrect statement (as usual!)."
