South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and Senator Lindsey Graham, both Republicans, are expected to call for the Confederate flag to be removed from the Statehouse grounds during a press conference at 4 p.m. (EDT) Monday.
The rebel flag still flies over the South Carolina Statehouse, more than 150 years after the slave-owning South was defeated in the Civil War, and is legally protected by the 2000 South Carolina Heritage Act.
People from across the country have called on South Carolina to remove the symbol of white supremacy after a white gunman killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston.
The confessed shooter, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, posed with Confederate flags in numerous photos and told his friends he wanted to "spark up the race war."
