Pope Francis arrives in the U.S. on Tuesday afternoon for his historic first visit to this country since assuming the mantle of pontiff.
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will greet Francis as he arrives at Andrews Air Force Base around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
The 78-year-old Francis is traveling from Cuba, where he received a warm welcome from President Raoul Castro and throngs of Cuba's faithful. He will receive a mixed reception in the U.S. where conservative politicians and media figures have taken umbrage at Francis' message of tolerance toward LGBT Catholics and women who have had abortions.
The progressive pope is popular with Americans in spite of the conservative backlash against his teachings. Recent polling has found that Francis appeals to Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
