Conservatives often like to laugh about college students creating "safe spaces" for themselves where they'll be free to talk about the issues that matter most to them without fear of being attacked by hostile arguments. It turns out that college left-wingers aren't the only ones who want safe spaces these days, however, as some Trump supporters in California say they're making safe spaces to escape the cruelty of Trump-hating liberals.
San Francisco-based public radio station KALW reports that Trump supporter Tracey Lindsey has for the past few months been organizing what she's calling "a safe space" for Trump fans to chat about their favorite candidate. Lindsey tells KALW that she has been targeted by people around her for having a Trump bumper sticker on her car, and she knows many other pro-Trump Californians are uncomfortable sharing their views about the candidate in public as well.
"We’ve had people, I don’t know if I can say this on the radio, say 'fuck you,'" she says. "They put dog poop in bags, next to the windshield wiper near the bumper sticker."
It's obviously wrong to vandalize someone's car or pelt them with dog feces, no matter whom they're supporting. At the same time, however, you can't help but be surprised by how sensitive some of these Trump supporters are, especially since Trump has made rampant insensitivity a hallmark of his political campaign.
"I kind of feel all alone, as a matter a fact," Trump supporter Mark Barnes tells KALW. Despite his sad loneliness, Barnes says one of the things he likes best about Trump is the way he attacks other people without fear of offending them.
"I’m more independent and conservative and I’m my own person," he explains. "That’s one of the things I like about Trump. I see myself in him, to be willing to say things, maybe be provocative."
It's hard to imagine why this guy doesn't have more friends despite modeling himself after a man who routinely calls women "bimbos," who attacks judges for being alleged "Mexicans" and who whines all the time about how unfairly he's being treated. It's a real mystery!
At any rate, KALW's full report is worth reading and can be found at this link.
