Colbert mocks Trump's pick of 'coma patient' Ben Carson to head HUD because 'he lived in public housing'

CBS Late Show host Stephen Colbert got off a variety of pot-shots at President-elect Donald Trump on Monday night, from his "oopsy daisy" call to Taiwan's president that provoked mainland China, to his selection of former rival Ben Carson to join his cabinet.

According to the late night host, the historically incurious Trump might have spoken with Taiwan's leader because he got his China's mixed up.

"Since they both speak Chinese, he wasn't sure which was which," Colbert quipped before offering some advice. "So here's an easy way for Donald Trump to remember which China we talk to. Sir, it's the one where they make your ties."

He then turned to Trump's continuing cabinet selections by singling out Carson.

"Today, he named former neurosurgeon and current coma patient Ben Carson to be Secretary of Housing and Urban Development," Colbert explained. "This is surprising because, just a few weeks ago, Carson made it clear he wasn't qualified to run a federal agency. But today Carson's spokesman explained that he is perfect for Housing and Urban Development because, 'He did spend part of his childhood in public housing.'"

"Yes!" he told his laughing audience. "So get ready for our next Surgeon General -- someone who has been to the doctor."
