The Young Turks' Cenk Uygur predicted Republican lawmakers are crafting an exit strategy for President Donald Trump if they're forced to remove him from office.
The left-wing commentator said Trump's instability or the Russia investigation could eventually require the GOP majority to end his presidency, either through impeachment or by invoking the 25th Amendment -- but he said they have an out.
“The people in power, especially the Republican Party, are not going to want to prosecute if (special counsel Bob) Mueller finds something,” Uygur said. “So the deal is, he’ll step down but don’t embarrass the whole country, especially the Republican party, by prosecuting a sitting president.”
He said Trump's longtime associate, Roger Stone, had already charted that exit strategy in May by accusing the president's political enemies of spreading rumors of Alzheimer's disease.
“He’s the one who planted that idea in the first place," Uygur said. "One of the reasons is, it could be used as a defense if he were caught having done something criminal."
But he said Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) had publicly revealed what many GOP lawmakers have been saying privately -- that the president is increasingly unstable and probably unfit for office.
"He is a danger," Uygur said. "They will say that it was Alzheimer’s."
