‘Why do this?’: Robert Reich shames Trump for cutting off health care for 8 million low-income Americans
Appearing on CNN’s New Day, former Clinton-era Labor Secretary Robert Reich and economist Douglas Holtz-Eakin hammered President Donald Trump’s decision to withhold subsidies for health insurance for lower income Americans, saying he made insurance more expensive for almost all Americans.
After Reich broke down in simple terms Trump’s late night executive order affecting the Affordable Care Act, he called out the president for his cruelty that made no sense either economically or morally.
“We are talking about a difference that is really not that different,” he stated with regard to the subsidy costs. “There are a lot of people — an estimated 6 million to 8 million people — I have seen the most latest estimates that are not going to be able to afford health insurance because of this change. We can debate exactly who they are, but the fact of the matter is they are lower income people and they won’t be able (to afford insurance).”
“Why do this? What is the point of doing this? Why is it necessary right now?” he continued. “Why when we are spending tens of millions of additional problems? Trump and Republicans want to spend more billions additionally on the military next year, and why can’t we afford $7 million for lower-income Americans for health care? That doesn’t make any sense.”
