Evangelical Christian leaders such as Jerry Falwell Jr. and Tony Perkins have been bending over backwards to excuse President Donald Trump's alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, and it seems that most rank-and-file evangelical voters are on board as well.
The Washington Post talked with some evangelical Trump supporters about how they view allegations that Trump had an affair with Daniels just four months after his wife had given birth to their son -- and it seems most of them are more than willing to give the president a mulligan.
"I'm not saying he didn’t do it," said 38-year-old Allen Cannon. "I don't agree with it if he did. But after all, he’s not God. So if he was God and was president, then I’d have a problem. That is the only being who is sin-free: God."
53-year-old Tammy Napier, however, refused to believe that Trump had really slept with a porn star and suggested that it was all part of a plot by his political foes to undermine him at every turn.
"I think a lot of people don’t like him and are out to get him any way they can," she said. "I'm from Missouri, the 'Show-Me State,' and I’m like, 'Show me the proof.'"
And 68-year-old Marva Burke also suggested that the Daniels story was a ploy by the Democrats to take down the president in any way possible.
"They're more interested in the smut," she said. "I'm sorry, give me a break. I don’t care about that stuff."
