Responding to reports that GOP lawmakers are pressing to introduce a bill that will protect animals on airlines following the tragic death a French bulldog stuffed into an overhead bin, CNN host Chris Cuomo marveled at the speed with which they are protecting pets but doing nothing about guns that are being used to slaughter students.
Sharing clips of former United Airline passengers describing how horribly their pets have been treated by United Airlines -- including a tearful teen describing finding her dog had died mid-flight -- CNN correspondent Athena Jones explained what steps United is taking to avert another tragedy and how Congress is responding.
"Republican Sen. John Kennedy (LA) is introducing legislation to ban animals from being put in overhead bins," a CNN report relayed "The Department of Transportation says 18 animals died on board United Airline flights last year, more than any other airlines. This is one year after they faced intense backlash after this video surfaced of a passenger being dragged off a United flight for refusing to get off the plane due to overbooking."
"Who can forget that story?" Jones added. "United has announced start anything April it will issue brightly colored tags to passengers traveling with pets to put on their pet carriers so they can be easily identified by the crew."
"That sounds like a start," host Alisyn Camerota suggested. "They can also listen to the passengers who are telling them the dog is in the carrier and the dog is barking."
Cuomo then jumped in to question the priorities of congressional lawmakers.
"That is legal language to cover themselves for what is sure to be a lawsuit," Cuomo exclaimed. "Also, an interesting aspect to this, John Kennedy, we've had him on the show, Republican senator out of Louisiana, here he is moving on this right away. 'What happened with this dog? We have to figure it out.' So bills are being introduced."
"School shootings? Not so much," Cuomo accused. "But this dog and why? Because they believe that you act out of consequence and not conscience. And they believe voters will reward and punish if they don't own this. They don't feel the same way about the other issue."
