MSNBC's Joe Scarborough said House Speaker Paul Ryan isn't going to turn on President Donald Trump after announcing his retirement from Congress because he'd already sold out.
The "Morning Joe" host said the 48-year-old House Speaker wouldn't be willing to burn any bridges in Washington, D.C., where Trump and his allies are charge.
"People sell out for different reasons," Scarborough said. "People humiliate themselves for different reasons. I don't know why (Newt) Gingrich is doing it -- maybe it is to stay in his good stead, maybe he thinks he's going to get an appointment."
"Some people will humiliate themselves to get an appointment, other people will humiliate themselves and lie for the president of the United States because they want to make money either on direct mail, perhaps, or lobbying the president of the United States," Scarborough continued.
Scarborough singled out Ryan as an example, and explained why he would not challenge Trump despite the lower political stakes now that he's not seeking re-election.
"People want Paul Ryan to come out and tell the truth," he said. "Paul Ryan is not going to tell the truth about Donald Trump because Paul Ryan wants to get a really big, fat paycheck. I don't know specifically about this and Paul Ryan, but let's just say if Paul Ryan started telling the truth about Donald Trump today, his power as a lobbyist would go down the drain."
