"He said the 'attack on our nation' as he's flanked by military officials," Coates, who formerly served as trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. She went on to suggest the comments were hypocritical in light of actual attacks on the United States that include Pearl Harbor and 9/11.
Coates, who in late March predicted that Trump's affair with adult actress Stormy Daniels would eventually bring about his downfall, said equating a "personal attorney issue" with an attack on the country "shows that he lacks all perspective — and perhaps his own narcissism and myopia is affecting his judgement."
Blitzer went on to call the comment "humiliating," and questioned why the president didn't consult with White House chief of staff John Kelly, a retired four-star general, before making the remark.
