A white West Virginia man was arrested for an apparently unprovoked attack on a black police officer.
Police said Lt. J.W. Ivy Jr. stopped his patrol car Tuesday at the Cedar Grove police station and got out when a passerby stopped his car in the middle of the street and called out a racial slur, reported WVAH-TV.
The officer asked the man, later identified as Michael Jerry Cornwell, not to call him that again -- but police said the 57-year-old used the slur three more times.
Ivy attempted to get Cornwell out of his car for threatening him, and police said the white man took a swing at the officer.
The officer and Cornwell wrestled through the car window as the driver continued throwing punches at him, according to police.
Cornwell was arrested and charged with assault during the commission of or attempt to commit a felony, and he remains held on $2,500 bond.
His mugshot does not appear to show any visible injuries from the arrest.
Cornwell in the past has shared a pro-police "Blue Lives Matter" post that originated with the pro-Trump Facebook group "For America," in addition to pro-gun and conservative patriotic memes.
